How we control rats and mice naturally

Natural rodent control is a combination of exclusion methods (keeping them out) and setting poison-free traps.

  1. We always start with an inspection and review our findings with you in person. If all you need is expert advice, the cost is $99. That inspection fee is waived if you buy the 3 Visit Plan. We typically set traps but do not seal holes at the first visit to avoid closing the animal inside.
  2. We return in about a week for monitoring: to check traps and seal off entry point holes with rodent-proof mesh. While the vast majority of our customers purchase the 3 Visit Plan, some jobs like trench and screens or gutter flashing require a quote.  We also charge extra for roof work requiring a safety harness.
  3. The third visit could be as simple as confirming that there is no new activity, or it could involve more sealing if we find new entry holes.

Why choose poison-free trapping?

Most pest control companies rely on poisonous baits to control rodents. These can be dangerous to children and pets if not placed and monitored properly.  Poisons also take a long time to kill the animals which means they can die in your walls. Lastly, the poison enters the food chain and can impact local cats, birds and other animals who eat the rodents. All of our traps are baited with non-toxic, natural peanut butter. We also offer ContraPest rat birth control.

What you can do to control rats and mice

  • Consider an owl box. A single owl can consume up to 12 rodents per night making them an ideal partner for natural pest control.
  • Keep clutter and garbage to a minimum. Rodents can nest in clothing, paper, and linens (just to name a few).
  • Keeping a foot wide perimeter around your home clear of shrubs, garbage, lawn debris, woodpiles, etc.
  • Removing any standing water around the property to reduce the number of watering sites.
  • Keeping pet food and other food sources in secured containers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

According to the US Census, Seattle is one of the rattiest cities in the nation. This high rodent population not only poses health risks and damages, but also challenges residents and businesses to implement effective control measures. However, rodent control requires a professional, trained eye because they can squeeze through gaps as small as 1/4 of an inch. Rodents also leave plenty of clues: some are subtle, others impossible to miss. The most common signs of a rodent problem include:

  • Droppings: Small, dark pellets (often found under sinks, in cabinets, along walls, or near food sources).
  • Noises at night: Scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds in walls, ceilings, or crawl spaces – especially after dark.
  • Gnaw marks: Chewed wires, baseboards, insulation, or food packaging.
  • Grease trails: Dark, greasy rub marks along walls or baseboards from repeated rodent travel paths.
  • Nests: Shredded paper, insulation, or fabric bundled together in hidden areas.
  • Unusual pet behavior: Cats and dogs suddenly staring, pawing, or sniffing at walls, appliances, or specific rooms.
  • Strong odors: A musky, ammonia-like smell that intensifies as the infestation grows.
  • Footprints or tail marks: Visible in dusty areas like basements, garages, or attic storage.

If you’re noticing any of these signs, chances are rodents have already settled in. Catching the issue early is key, followed by professional inspection and exclusion, which can prevent damage, contamination, and a growing population.
